European economic and monetary union has changed the structure of international monetary relations fundamentally. In this text two economists – one from the US, the other, Europe – offer transatlantic perspsectives on the ramifications of the launch of the Euro. C. Randall Hennings examines American views on Europe’s monetary union, looking at the political, economic and institutional interests of the US as they are affected by the creation of the Euro: Pier Carlo Padoan considers the Euro as a potential global currency and examines the transition between a regional currency and a global currency.
