This comprehensive study into one of the central aspects of most welfare states provides a systematic and comparative analysis of social insurance regimes in 10 European countries with very different traditions of welfare. Central questions explored are: what are the institutional and political forces that have shaped national systems of social insurance?; and what are the current features of social provision and social insurance programmes?
